One of Australia's most popular tourist destinations, the tropical city of Cairns forms the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the wet tropical rainforests of the Daintree; both regarded as World Heritage sites
.

Cairns was established in 1876 as a service port for gold miners in the Atherton Tablelands to the west.

The city lies between the Coral Sea and the Great Dividing Range and is blessed with beaches, freshwater lakes, bays, estuaries, mangrove swamps, mudflats, tidal wetlands, tablelands, hinterland forest and rocky gorges. Cairns is the site of an international airport and a must-see tourist destination.

Native aboriginal tribes have called the lands in and around Cairns home for centuries. The northern part of the city was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770, the first European to reach the city.

A major commercial area, Cairns is the site of various government offices, and is the fourth most popular tourist destination in Australia because of its ecological significance, tropical climate, incredible diving, resort and water sports experiences complemented by a tourism friendly local community.

The club scene gains momentum after the sun sets and Cairns lights up with dozens of places to dine in style, drink with friends and dance until sunrise. Australian restaurants serve international cuisines alongside exotic local dishes featuring intriguing Australian meats like kangaroo and crocodile. The bustling Esplanade hosts hundreds of market stalls and eateries, providing quick bites for evening shoppers.
